F.A.Q.

Am I good enough to attend camp?

We will ride each day for at least 1.5 hours, 3 for some, and more for those that want to extend the riding, less for those that don't. We can stop and take breaks as needed.

The larger group will split into multiple groups so everyone can ride at their own pace and be comfortable.

Our pace is such that most all riders are fine on these rides and at this length.  Do not be scared by the length of the ride.  If at any time a rider needs to cut his ride short then our staff is able to assist.  This is normal.

I'm really fast, will the rides be for me?

At times the pace might be slow, but we have staff eager to change that for you.  Take the optional extended ride and it will work out.

How strenous are the rides?

The rides range from 1.5 hours each day up to 2-3 hours for those that want to extend their riding time.  These rides are suited for the ability level of beginner level racers and up.  Hills on route will be from 100 to 300 foot elevation gains at the most and then around 600 for one day.

We do stop at all intersections to re-group so there is time during the ride to rest, and we rest as is needed.

We may split into groups according to the speed at which you want to ride.  This enables the ones riding faster to keep rolling.

For the riders who want to go fast there will be plenty of that available.

Where do we stay?

We have a large rental house.  Rooms are generally assigned according to like-ages or you may choose a roommate.  The house is in the one on the farm we have used in the past owned by a fellow mountain biker.

Food?

All food is prepared daily by our staff.  We also have snacks available to eat during the day.  Any special request can be handled before the start of camp for your preferences or special needs.  Just let us know.  However, this is not a milk-drinking camp, so we are not able to store enough milk for drinking, only enough for breakfast and cooking use.

I do not know anyone, will I make friends?

Unlike anywhere else, you are among like-minded people.  You will quickly make friends on the first day easily and find you have more in common than just bikes with the other campers.  No longer will you be the weird kid who rides his bike all the time. Our staff is trained to help the entire group gel, this is important to us.

What bike do I need?

A suitable XC racing mountain bike designed for rugged off-road trail use.  Knobby tires, front suspension fork (or full suspension), and a wide range of gearing, but no single speeds.

If we can establish that you are a competitive racer who will be able to ride a heavier long-travel bike then it will be fine to bring, but otherwise a big heavy bike is not suitable, and can only put a struggling rider at a disadvantage.

Clipless pedals are mandatory unless pre-approved by staff to ride platform pedals.

Cycling shoes.

Disc brakes do much better than rim brakes, but optional.

The laytex tire sealant system is recommended also as this prevents flats.  See www.truckerco.com for their "Cream" sealant system.  Ask for Andy's Summer Camp Discount.

Do I need to be part of a team or school to attend camp?

No, the camp is open for all.

When do I fill in the registration information?

After you register, and before the camp we will send the necessary forms, which will include travel directions, for you to sign and mail back in.

Please mail these as many campers would bring incomplete forms to camp and cause a hassle.

Do I still need to fill all the waivers out completely with redundant information?

Yes, please fill out the info.  The wiavers will become separated during camp with the medical infomation going into a medical file, and  USAC waivers going into a USAC file and the remainder in yet another file.  Missing information can complicated matters at a time of urgency.

How do I get to camp?

Travel directions will be included in your camp paperwork. We do not make public our lodging location.

If you need assistance getting to camp from your town then contact us for solutions.  We may be able to put you with staff or other camp attendees from your home town for carpooling.

Is this camp only for CycleYouth team racers?

We welcome other juniors to join in with us.  Our staff is dedicated to teaching young cyclist about this wonderful sport with topics that include training, nutrition, skills, periodization and how to navigate the world of sponsorships. Everything else is subordinate to the camp.  We want everyone to benefit.

CycleYouth, Inc is an organization built to develop junior racers.  CycleYouth does have a small team, but is not limited to team activities.  CycleYouth is bigger than one team.  The organization also has a club level that is open to anyone of any team with no strings.  The summer MTB camp is a service CycleYouth offers to help juniors in the sport.

How do I get a camp jersey?

Camp jerseys are ordered late March for those who have already specified a size and then the remaining jerseys are ordered in several sizes for the late registrations.  This is a guess.  We assign the remaining jersey sizes as registrations come in in the order which they come in.

Jerseys are included in the camp, but not guaranteed after the end of March.
